After a good service my Peugeot 406 still uses lots of petrol despit being 4 cyl 2 litre,any thoughts plz

by good service, you mean plugs, wires, air filter?
un serveced fuel injectors may need to be looked at.
poor fuel milage can be from, dirty air cleaner, dirty fuel injectors, worn spark plugs, out of balance engine sencesors, engine slightly out of time, dragging transmittion.
Have a trusted mechanic take a look at it.

l own a repair shop,and it might be a good time for a tune up on it,,even though it was serviced really good,,the timing and all of that really needs to be checked out good on it,,i have a customer that owns one of these and his does pretty good on fuel,,considering what it is.. you might want to have the running part of it checked out real good ,sometimes over looking one small thing can really make one use a lot of gas,,good luck with it,hope this help,s.,happy new years also.

l had a couple of diesel 405s and they ran forever sold one to my mate (13 year old vehicle) and it is still doing 50 odd to the gallon maybe its time to convert to diesel.

French should stick to making wine and get out of the automotive business. If you think you got it tough with a Peugteot you should try getting parts for a Saab.

l assume it is fuel injected,it may not be running in closed loop,closed loop is when the computer is controlling the injection rate.Two areas to look at,oxygen sensor,and engine coolant temp sensor,if the sensor has an open cicuit it will send a signal to the computer that the engine is running at -40c,hence no closed loop operation also check the thermostat make sure it is not stuck open,the engine cannot get up to running temp
