l only hear the noise really when driving slowly round corners. Its even worse if l do a u-turn. Any ideas? Do you think its an expensive job?? Thanks

could be your bearings, if you know someone who can fix cars shouldnt be too much, if not get quotes from garages!

l had a Mercedes that did that. Upon inspection they found out it had been in a wreck and was written off. Actually what someone did was put two that were written off together. Not only was l told to take it off the road l had no recourse to get my money back. Now l only buy from a reputable dealer and have MY mechanic check it out first.

When u turn a corner, the wheel on the outside of the curve travels faster, has more load on it, & the tire pressure increases slightly.
YES, ur cv joint, constant velocity joint is probably the problem. On a Peugeot 206, the left & right driveshafts r different lengths. Most garages do not want to charge u for the hours of labour to rebuild the cv joint. They just want to sell u a NEW driveshaft, & stick it back in quickly.

l bought the LONG driveshaft (right side = driver side UK) for a 1993 205 last summer. An aftermarket brand (not Peugeot) cost 160 euro including tax ($232 USD ). l am guessing that ur 206 LONG shaft will be similar in price.

You must be a reasonably good mechanic, a lift is not necessary, but helpful. You must drain gearbox oil & replace copper drain plug gasket-ring. You must remove wheel, steering tie rod end, brake disc & caliper, ( 3 maybies?), Driveshaft end nut (250 ftpds torque). You will need a heavy torque wrench to put all back to specifications, plus new oil, oil seal ring. Putting all parts back together is difficult, u r working against the downward strength of the front strut & the torsion bar.
It is easily 3 hours' work for a mechanic.

The short driveshaft is much less expensive, but the same other headaches.

c/v joint

its definately your cv joint a simple test is to go to an industrial site or empty car park and try it on full lock in both directions that will also tell you which side is gone, cv joints are quite expensive but no more than an hrs work for a reputable garage.
