l have a key largo 'pug' 106 but at the minute its making a funny noise. Think it might be the fan belt. If l took it to a local garage and they say the same, would it be costly?

You can do a diy change on a fan belt in about 5 Min's. It might be a bearing on a water pump that needs changing which can be expensive.

l have a 206. There is no fanbelt on transverse engines, as the fan is at the front.
However there r two belts for the engine.
One is the Auxilliary belt giving power to the Alternator & power steering if fitted.
The other is the Timing belt which is hidden under a plastic cover.
Unfortunately they have put the coolant pump on this timing belt.
Squeeks can come from Alternator, idler pulley or power steering pump on the AUX belt, or Waterpump on the timing belt.
Try taking off the aux belt & test run the engine. If no squeek - it is fairly easy to fix - just find & source of dry rust or rough bearing.
If it still squeeks, it is probably the water pump- & this involves locking the cam while removing the timing belt.
Re-tensioning is also not straightforward as u need a device to check the tension afterwards.
Probably best to get a quote for timing belt & water pump replacement. - Better sooner than later, as a snapped belt will cause valves to be bent - destroying ur engine.

Dont let people scare you, its the auxillery belt that needs tightening, if you look at the front left of the engine you should see the belt and it you look around that area you should find the belt adjuster, all you have to do is loosen the securing nut then tighten the bolt a little bit and retighten the securing nut. A garage would probably do this for free, only takes a moment
