l have a 1998 peugeot 406 1.8 petrolcar, it seems to start ok when 1st started but if l turn the engine of and then try restarting it just keeps turning over but not fireing up. after a few trys and a couple of minitues of trying to start it finally starts and sounds fine. Any help to the prblem would be great. Thank You.

maybe its with the battery

It needs tuning. When you first start it, the injectors will be pumping in extra fuel. If you turn it off and try and start it then because the engine has not warmed up then it will do the same again, effectively flooding the engine.

If you keep turning it over then you are just adding to the problem.

Additional to VInZent: If it was his battery then it would not turn over, would it.

The fuel could be running back to the tank, have you got a non return valve fitted, this could be at fault, then the pump has to pump the fuel up again.Have you had the carb cleaned out, jets blown etc?Check these first before you start spending money. On a cold start you will be flooding anyway, you are better leaving it a few minutes, then restarting it,instead of wasting battery power,.

It is probably cos the engine is cold.

does it fire ok when you've been driving it for a while?

check your ignition timing, or take it to a garage.

I'd also reccomend buying an audi.

it sounds like you have a lazy fuel pump when u first start it its using the fuel left in the pipe then when restarting the fuel pump isnt giving enuf power to push the fuel throgh thus when constantly turning over bit by bit thepetrol is being pumped to the fuel line

The 406 runs quite lean? and you have to use the accelerator to catch the engine once its been started the first time.Sounds quite normal to me?

Sounds like the petrol mixture is a bit lean. OK on cold start up when the automatic choke enrichens the air/fuel mixture, but not after it is been running for a while. Just needs a tune up, that is all.

it could be the fuel lines when engine is turned off the fuel fall back down the lines. l have seen cars where there is a valve that stops it from happening. it happens on most cars, people think that it is the battery but it isnt.

Hope this helps
