It is not the brakes, they work fine.Noise is heard only when driving. It sounds like a quiet cement mixer, somewhere towards the right side.l have a 1.0 petrol motor.

Sounds like wheel bearings have gone.

You did not say the year of ur Peugeot 205. but since l have owned several, l will tell u what to look for.
1983 to 1998: These wheel bearings r VERY READY by now to be worn out! The test for this is to put on some garden gloves. Grab the right-hand wheel firmly & try to SHAKE IT hard. Do u feel any play, any click, anything less-than-solid? Do u see any uneven wear on that tire?

Yes? This is a replacement job for an experienced DIY person. Replace ONLY the one wheel bearing, because u may not have this old car forever. You can purchase SKU bearing # VKBA882. This fits left or right 205.. '83-'97 costs about 45 euro. (dont pay full price for Peugeot parts!) You will need a repair shop to ''press'' the old one ''out & the new one ''in''.

1983 - 87: Drive shaft noise. Do u also hear ''clunk clunk clunk'' when u turn a sharp corner to the right? This is a bad drive shaft END. And it is not worth fixing. Get a used replacement. Scrapyard. 40 euro or so. If u do not hear the clunk.. ignore this advice.

1987 - 98: TU-9 engine one litre. Right hand drive shaft ONLY. This is a different engine, with a right hand drive shaft that is VERY long, & it has another bearing in the middle, to help it bend 30 degrees. AND THIS BEARING IS THE NOISE YOU HEAR!!
This bearing DOES wear out faster than the wheel bearings. Around 150,000 km = 100k miles.
This drive shaft is difficult to remove as u r lying on the ground. There r hidden bolts to remove it. You need a hammer & a bad attitude. And it costs 200 euro, new! 100 used, if u can find one, because EVERYBODY needs one after 100k miles.
l have changed two in my life. It is two afternoon is work, in & out. But it is possible with NO special tools, except a torque wrench for reinstrallation of hubnut, tie rod end, & lower ball joint bolt.
Are u a good mechanic??
Good luck!

It is that French autoworker that was trapped under the dash while the car was being assembled.please release him.
