A little more information would be handy, when the car does not start have you just stopped or have you been trying from cold. The clicking would be the starter solenoid trying to make contact. It may be that there is dirt in the solenoid and that the contact is not making properly. A possible solution is a new starter with the solenoid attached which is just an unbolt and bolt on job, about 20 minutes at most.

Hi

It sounds as though u have a dodgy starter motor, but to be safe, check the condition & integrity of the engine earth(s) at the battery & where ever else it goes, & do the same for the positive wire. Then grab a volt meter & read on..

Turn on the ignition but do not start the engine. Check the large red wire on the back of the starter for battery voltage. If there is no or very little voltage there then follow the wire back over & check its condition as u go, especially at the battery.

If there is voltage then have someone crank the engine (or attempt to crank the engine) as u check the small switch wire on the starter for battery voltage. With the key in the cranking position there should be battery voltage at the small wire, & it should drop to zero once the key is released.

If there is voltage but the starter is not operating then the starter is at fault.

If there is no voltage then u need to trace the small wire & check its integrity as u go. You will probably end up at the ignition switch, as this is where these faults usually stem from.

Good luck

Your starter motor SOLENOID is the problem. The little solenoid sits on top of the larger starter motor. The click u hear is the little spring inside TRYING to slide to one side. When it slides sucessfully, the electricity goes to the powerful starter motor.

You can HELP the little spring by tapping on it with a hammer handle, IF YOU CAN REACH IT???
Then ur car will start, this time. But not reliably tomorrow.

When the solenoid is bad, u should consider replacing BOTH it & the starter. They r the same age (4 years).

YOU DO NOT HAVE to buy an expensive Peugeot part. Go to a car parts store & ask for another brand that fits this car. Save at least 30% on the price.

(to PROVE it is the solenoid, just ask me how, in additional details, & l will add the PROOF test for this self-test)
