Hello, Im hoping someone can help me, l have a peugeot 406 1.8 petrol and recently ive been having trouble starting it, Some days l come out and its completely dead (Although the dashboard lights and headlights work) Anyway the battery light has started coming on when l turn the ignition off, It stays on all the time, So l bought a new battery yesterday and its still doing it, The battery light is on constantly but it goes off when the car is running and today l turned the ignition off and took the key out and the windscreen wipers stayed on! Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? Thanks in advance
l should also mention that the radio also works with the ignition off, It doesnt usually and my remote central locking has stopped working

sounds like a diode in the alternator is bad, draining the battery,, have a local auto parts place check the diode bridge,

l suppose it could be a number of things, l am no expert but what l would do is take it to a local peugeot dealership and let them investigate further. It might be something or nothing.

something is shorting out there, have you had a new stereo fitted recently? or anything else electrical repaired?, if not check for water in the lights/boot/floor by your feet. if not get it to a non dealer peugeot expert. they (propably) wont skank you.

It is the alternator , more precisely it is the diode pack in the alternator.
If you've got any mechanical knowledge & u want to keep the cost down then take it off & take it to a firm that specialises in alternators & starters (they r quite common these days ,look in ur phone book or google it) if not then take the car down there & they will get it off & sort it cheaper than a garage cos a garage normally does not stock this sort of kit so they have to send out for it which bumps up the cost.
Hope this helps

Cheers Cheeky...

what age is ur 406?
does it have spilt rear lights?
Have u checked in ur boot?
is there signs of water entry in the spare wheel area?
if so check the drivers front carpet!!!!
if its wet then u have a problem
there is an multi plug under the drivers carpet & it will be corroded very bad & causes this to happen all the time.
get a garage to repair the plug should cost app 100-150
get them to seal the rear lights too as that is where the water eners from
and runs down the carpets to the front
