its unwise and un safe to fit a second hand tow bar, if you buy new from a dealer or eBay (cheep on eBay) it comes in kit form with detailed instructions and all the bolts and spacer tubes that you are likely to need.

The towbar l have is SOLID steel, second hand, & could kill an elephant. You wo not be pulling a TON, so do not worry.

l have a 1989 405 estate, & a tow bar (trailer hitch USA). There r two different models, so get the one that fits ur car is year. The frame is slightly different on newer years? Maybe u have the wrong dimension one now, & that is why u have some doubts? The ''arms'' of the towbar should fit perfectly with holes already drilled in the under-frame.

Use New bolts & lock washers / locking nuts. 10mm, l remember. Two bolts go on each side, & the holes r already waiting in the frame of the car. Two bolts go through the cargo floor (under the carpet).
l believe there r 6 attachment points in all. When it is light out tomorrow, l will doulble check & correct myself if necessary.

The wiring is tricky. On the 405 u have tail lights on the body.. AND on the estate hatch back door. l tapped into all the light wiring for all the contacts in my towbar female plug.
However, the 405 also has lights in the estate hatchback door, & for these l had to run a separate wire along the door. to the inner roof surface.. then down again to the tailllight compartment.
When the door opens upwards, my extra wire flexes, without problems. It is secured against the body & unnoticeable.

The 405 with the 1.9 litre fuel injected engine is designed to pull 750 kg. And no additional insurance payment was necessary for me, here in Belgium. Alert ur assurance company to be on the safe side.

More questions? l will check back tomorrow.Trevor.
