Nobody has answered u in one day. sorry.
l have a 1989 1.9 litre, petrol, fuel injected Peugeot 405.
There is no ''cooling pipe'' on the power steering assist. l have never in my life heard of a cooling pipe for any power steering. It just does not get that hot.

However, my father in law has 7 diesel 405's. His hobby. l will phone him tomorrow, visit, & get u a good answer.

ONE DAY LATER: l went to the library & looked up books on big/diesel engines1995 Renault, Citroen, Ford. NO engine has power steering cooling pipes. (diesel fuel warming, yes) l phoned a master Nissan mechanic. No Nissan has this. He said some old Fords in 1975 had a PS cooling feature.
FATHER IN LAW: expert on the 405 model. Worked on Peugeots his whole life. (me only 16 years) He says, there is no Power Steering Cooling System, as l suspected earlier.

Do u mean POWER Steering fluid, hydraulic pump assist pipes?
If so, these two small pipes leave the bottom of the steering column, & travel under a heat shield towards the center of the car. (mine is left hand drive).? The PSpump is driven by the auxiliary belt (rt side engine) & ONE metal pipe runs across the front of the engine to the Fluid reservoir.

Tell ur garage mechanic to be more specific. He means power Steering hydraulic lines have rusted & begun to leak. 200 pounds is ridiculous. But u will need a lift to work totally under the car.

l do not know where it is on a 406, but it will be run from the fan/auxiliary belt. Have a look for the belt & u will be able to find the power steering pump, from there just trace the pipe until u find the leak. You will be able to buy a length of pipe from a motor factor (tell him it is for power steering).

If fancy end (banjo bolts) connectors need to be changed over u can use a quality jubilee clip instead of the factory stuff. Just make sure it is nice & tight!
