Get a second quote for a start off!!!! That seems really high! l had the same problem with my clio and it cost me £250! was worth it though cos is a proper sound car!! If you can not afford l suggest trying to part ex it .

You might be well advised to buy another motor, the head gasket will be expensive enough as the cylinder head will probably need skimming, and as for the gearbox, well that could also be expensive even at mates rates.

it all depends on how u feel about giving a car 2 sum1 when u know it will break down and cost 900 quid 2 fix. personally id feel rotten doing that and would see if l could get it fixed cheaper by finding the part needed in a scrapyard or sumfin en ur just paying the mechanics labour. but if u dnt mind having that on ur conscience then part exchange it.

Time to say goodbye to the peugeot, it is not worth the money when repairs get that expensive.

I'd make enquiries about a reconditioned gearbox

l love my 1999 206, l would be tempted to get a 2nd opinion and a further quote before deciding, ok your head gasket needs replacing but what is the score with the gearbox? is this what the garage said? mmm get an other quote and if it comes out at say £700 -£800 l would keep it cos it is probably worth £1700 - 2k depending on cond and mileage, OR if u have no cash get shut and get one of those no deposit, nothing to pay for a year deals.

Cheapest option would be to get a second hand engine and gearbox complete from a write off and replace the lot in one go,make sure there is some sort of guarantee with it or if donor car not too bad take it for a short test drive first.Good luck.

take it to the nearest scrap yard you might get as much as £35 for it
