After travelling at 30-40 mph, then slowing down for a junction, pulling the car out of gear, the engine dies. After a few times restarting - it gets up and going again. What could be the potential issue?

the hdi does this a lot, no matter what car its installed in if in the other hand, yours is the 1.9 turbo, l have driven that engine for 200k miles with never a day is problem.

You are probably getting air into the injection lines fuel filter sealing rings are the main cause on this engine.
