l am looking to buy a p reg peugeot 106 'extra time'. went to see it today and the remote central locking does not work.

l am just wondering if the keys for this model have a chip in them for the immobiliser because if l was to replace the key for the r/c/l would l have to replace the entire computer thing that reads the chip or just programme it to read another chip- if you get what l mean ?? many thanks
thanks for your , i'm just worried that if l buy it and l need to replace the keys for whatever reason that i will have to fork out to replace the whole system because it wo not recognise the new key. l can live without the central locking though!! l know that the car has a built in immobiliser of this helps anyone who knows about these cars.

most of the remotes in peugeot do have a ignition chip you have to have a key for the ignition with a chip coded to that car . to change everything your best bet is to check with peugeot you might have to something changed they could tell you straight away with your registration and chassis number.

If the car has a keypad in the centre console (being a P plate it should have) then this is the immobiliser. There is no chip in the key on this type of immobiliser. They started to fit them around S or T reg l think. First l would confirm the battery in the remote is ok & the central locking actually works (try locking the car manually with the key). If all this works ok then read on. Does the remote have one round button it? If so look at the plastic panel in the headlining of the car that the interior light is fixed to. There should be a black/very dark piece of plastic trim here. If all this reads correct so far it sounds like ur car has the early type remote locking. There is a remote pick up inside the interior lamp trim, it will have a number on it. Likewise, if u open up the remote the same number will be inside the remote on a sticker. If u buy a new remote or pick up u need this number as the pair r 'matched'. Check the pick up in the roof, this is prone to failure due to water leaking onto it because of a loose or badly sealed roof aerial. You can also have the remote tested at a main dealer, they should do this for free, it only takes a few seconds to do. Either way, if u have to renew the remote or sensor, they r both pretty expensive so haggle on the price of the car. A cheaper alternative may be to fit an aftermarket alarm or remote locking kit. Let me know if it does not have a keypad in the centre console. Peugeot may have started fitting transponder immobilisers before Citroen.
