i've heard the oil level indication on the dash sometimes goes haywire when you change the oil, any advice on servicing one, its a 1.9 D 05 plate, normally aspirated engine.

taa very much, charlie

Charlie,
Just be sure to drain the oil completely ensuring that u make sure u use a new drain plug washer & also check that the old filter housing sealing washer comes of with the old filter.
Autodata gives the oil capacity as between 4.25 & 4.5 ltrs, so l would fill engine slowly & when u have put in about 3.5 to 3.75 ltrs of oil, start to check the oil level on the dipstick & add oil in small amounts until it shows at the max on the dipstick, once it shows max on the dipstick, make sure the van gearstick is in neutral & start the van & let it idle till the oil light goes out. Turn off the ignition & leave the engine oil to settle for about 5 mins, re-check the level & top up if necessary.
The oil level system is obviously software driven so it will take a few minutes for the dash indicator to reset so as long as ur dipstick shows the correct level & there r no leaks, do not worry. Switch off the ignition & it will reset itself. Nissan is r the same & came of a shock when they appeared with this system fitted & it took a few attempts to get it right with these too.
Good Luck
Cheers

Easier answer, do it with the ignition turned off, allow the oil to settle for at least ten minutes after you fill it up to the correct level then turn it on.

They're simple vans to service, do not put more than 4.2 litres of oil in though. Use 10/40 semi synthetic oil. And do not take any notice whatsoever of the useless oil level gauge on the dash. They can be very inaccurate at times . Always trust the dipstick & keep the level below the max mark, u do not want to overfill the engine & have it run on it is own oil & watch it go bang! When changing the fuel filter do not overtighten the plastic strap holding the lid on as it can break. Take notice of how tight it is before removing the strap & tighten it back up to the same point. You may experience a little bother getting the engine to start after changing the filter. Prime the system using the button next to the filter until it goes hard, leave it for a few minutes then do it again. If the van wo not start have someone crank the engine while u pump the primer, eventually it will fire up. Also if the van does not have ABS remember to lubricate the brake compensator lever & make sure it moves (it is above the rear axle assembly close to the driver is side brake pipe).
