Twist it off,
If it wont put a cloth over it and grip it with some large pipe grips and twist.

Oh yeah The 205 GTi was amazing.

NO NO NO.. u people r just guessing.

l now own a 1990, 93, 94, & 84 Peugeot 205 (none r GTi). l just went out to the 90 & IT DOES NOT TWIST OFF.
It was meant to be on there permanently. Plastic is formed onto the metal shaft. Twist all day long & it stays in place. Even if u pry off the gear pattern 1-2-3-4-5 R, there is nothing underneath to unscrew.

Just like my 305 from the 1980's, u have to destroy the knob to remove it. Then add a new knob that has ''allen screws = imbus screws'' to secure it to the shaft.

CHALLENGED BY ROOKETHORNE (answerer #5) l just went out to my '94 parts-car 205. The gear knob did not screw off, but when l pulled very hard. straight up. it suddenly came off. There r no screw threads, but ribbed metal.
So, jonny h, try pulling upwards very hard.
Then l returned to my '90 205. l pulled upwards with ALL my might. Nothing. It is on there forever, but it will twist round & round. No thread lock glue used there at all.
l can try the 1993, 205 later this evening. The 84, 205 is covered up for the winter.

NO SCREW THREADS on my cars made in France! (Ryton, England? was different maybe)

Sorry Trevor, the knob unscrews.

It is quite tight to begin with as they use a thread locking compound on it.

Removing the top wo not show you anything.

Apologies Trevor - we just tried a later one and could not move it either.

You are probably right about the country of manufacture.

Dunno about a 205 but the vast majority of Citroen/Peugeot gearknobs are pressed on, you just need to grip it very tightly and PULL!!! Be prepared to get trapped between the seats when it lets go though as some of them are pretty tight.

Twisting does nothing, just pull it straight off - thats how l got mine off my 205. Mind you dont smash the rear view mirror like l did though!!!
