Hi l was just wondering if anyone can help, l changed the gearbox on my 406 and since then its been leaking gearbox oil its coming from drivers side driveshaft l have went to a garage today and paid £50 for a new drivershaft seal on gearbox and its still leaking could it be the driveshaft itself?? someone said the gearbox could possibly be broke, can anyone who is a peugoet expert help as l cant keep affording all these bills it cost £250 for the gearbox and clutch
Hi there is no grinding noise just leaking l have found this on another answer does this peugoet have the same thing?

There is a sealed bearing inside the outer edge of the L/H inner cv boot. There should be a steel clip around the outside of the cv boot which keeps this bearing in place. Changing the boot is the only cure for the problem. The drive shaft needs to be removed from the car (drain the gear oil 1st), then undo the steel clip, remove the inner 3 bearing joint , tap off the old cv boot and bearing. Refitting is a reversal of removal but be careful not to damage the new unit when tapping it on.
Thanks got it sorted it was something that needed replaced in the gearbox itsself, thanks for all your help guys!

Hi l would take it back to the garage that replaced the oil seal.
They could have damaged the oil seal when they put the driveshaft back into the gearbox very easily done.
They could have just knocked the spring off the back of the seal, making it leak or they could have damaged they sealing surface,or just fitted the seal incorrectly.

It could be the bearing on the shaft being worn.

If it is worn, the shaft will move slightly, if it moves then the seal will not seal and oil will leak.

Good luck!

Both above mine r good ones. Remember, the UK driver is side drive shaft does have an intermediate bearing, about 15 inches away from the gearbox. If it is worn out, it will make grinding noises too.

The new oil seal has a feather -thin rubber edge to it. It needs to be perfectly in contact with the drive shaft at all times.
AND! on the 405 & 205 ( l assume the 406 as well) there is another rubber seal on the outside of the gearbox. It is a fat rubber doughnut. do u see it? Is it there?

SORRY.. l have no experience with the 406 cv joints & strange outer sealed bearings. sorry. Only the fact that all current Peugeot engines have 2 drive shafts of unequal length. (since about 1986)
