Is this a fair price?

l mean the parts are only £11 for the cylinder and£25 for shoes so l can not imagine the labour being that expensive.

get a second quote but l think you will find it about the same price as he will have to bleed the system after fitting the cylinder £250 sounds right to me cheaper to do the job yourself

Going by the age of your car,you will also need to possibly renew the rear brake pipes. The price you quote for a cylinder sounds too cheap?there are different braking systems on a 106,eg,bendix.It will take approx 1 hour per side to do.hope this helps

Invest £20 in a Haynes Manual and do it yourself! Your mechanic is a crook. Or call a Peugeot dealer. They can do it with their eyes shut and will give you a decent quote.

l agree this is very expensive. l agree, buy the book and do it yourself in the driveway.
250 pounds is the price when somebody really does not want to do it, or they have enough customers at the moment.

Its about right.

Are u sure that was the price of the job, or how much he was offering u for the car? It seems about right, but it would be advisable to replace both rear cylinders - the other one could fail at any time, (both the same age) - false economy if u don't. Also both sets of rear brake shoes will have to be replaced at the same time, as one side will be contaminated by brake fluid & will be impossible to clean,- the complete system bled through to remove any air bubbles. See if he is will replace both cylinders for that price otherwise it could be another £250 quite soon.

Looks like we have a lot of main dealer and halfords users on here tonight.
How would it sound about right to be charged £100 an hour to replace the rear brakes?
You would be robbed, find a different garage. Even if it needs pipes replaced it will be about 50cm long max to the rubber hose so decent mechanic with flaring tool could make them for about £3 each.

Sounds a lot to me, if you are not confident to DIY ask friends/family to suggest other repair garages you can try.

l would shop around a bit more because my dad has a 106 and for the rear cylinder and shoes he was charged only 150 pound. it would not do any harm looking round for a better price
