You do not need a thermostat at all to drive a car. l did this in Florida for 2 years. BUT!!!
l was just stupid in Florida.

The thermostat is necessary to keep ur engine operating at a high temperature. You will get better petrol / mileage when ur engine operates at 90+ Centigrade.
Without a thermostat ur coolant is constantly cycled through the radiator & stays at about 70 degrees Centigrade. TOO cool to help ur engine, & too cool to heat ur car, & defrost ur windscreen in winter.
BUT IN SUMMER, on a long fast trip on the motorway.YIKES, u could overheat fast, in 10 minutes, it is too late..Head gasket warping!

If ur took ur thermostat OUT, then u only needed 10 minutes & 10 British pounds to put the NEW thermostat back into the engine. ?????

Your punishment: drive that car forever, & spend the extra money for fuel per mile. And in about one year, new piston rings for scraping against cooler cylinder walls.
good luck my friend.

The thermostat is either stuck open, doesnt open or opens partially, you can drive the car without any problems as long as you keep an eye on the temperature guage and do not overheat the engine in which case you will cause some damage. The situation that might cause the most problems is if the thermostat will not open which will restrict water flow but you can even drive it short distances in this situation by watching the temp guage

As Trevor says taking the thermostat out is not going to ruin your engine any time soon, but it will mean that your engine will most likely never heat up to the optimal temperature that the thermostat keeps your engine at.
Leaving it out will see increased fuel consumption and also increased emissions from your engine.
