With the cost of diesel these days, probably not much difference if you're talking new cars.
l test drove the 207 1.4 for a week and it returned 55 mpg average. l am guessing the diesel wo not have been much better than that, though l could not be sure. Also the diesel will cost more to start with usually.. (but then again, may hold it is value better too).
Basically, not a lot of difference!

http://parkers.co.uk give average fuel economy figures for most vehicles: It shows that the 1.4 averages 41mpg, and the 1.9D averages 44mpg. Given that diesel is around 10% dearer than petrol, the 1.4 would be marginally cheaper to run (albeit by a fractional amount)

You cannot make a decision on fuel costs alone, u have to take into account servicing costs. The diesel car has a fuel filter which requires changing more regularly than a petrol car. It may use a ''Longlife'' engine oil, that will cost considerably more than the oil used in a petrol engine. If it uses normal diesel oil, this requires to be changed more often than the oil in a petrol engine. Add to this the cost of labour at the dealers & things start to stack up against the diesel car. The best alternative is a car equipped with LPG, which is about 49 p a litre. That price will remain fairly static even when the diesel fuel has gone up to £1.50 litre.

Overall there wont be enough difference to base a purchase decision on. If you intend keeping it for a long time the pug diesels run for ever. The 306 NON turbo diesel is slow in overtaking and l promptly got rid of the one l had for that reason, the turbo is nice though.

the 1.9 diesel is a good engine although service costs are high and its in the higher tax bracket than the petrol however, the 1.4 engine is a little small for the 306, the 1.6 actually uses less fuel and l feel thats your best bet, service costs are reasonable and things like cam belt and clutch are easier to change and cheaper to do, their pretty reliable engines but avoid high milers
