one of the wires needs to be connected to a permanent live for it to retain its memory however sadly l dont know which wire on this model

Yes, you probably have the red & yellow wires (switched & permanent live) connected incorrectly.

just red somthing regarding aftermarket cd players fitted into trhe pug range.read ebay listing link below.
206 (1998>2001) has the 2 live feeds for the radio the wrong way round for most aftermarket CD players.

The wiring adaptor supplied in this kit swops the live feeds round to stop the new CD player losing it is memory every time you switch it off.

so basically the 2 live/perm lives need swaped over.

have you used a Iso wiring harness converter lead, If you have not and you plug a garage diagnostic equipment in you will short circuit the machine. purchase a harness lead from halfords or from the site below:

http://incarelectrics.co.uk/53852c113319/Vehicle-Specific-Products/Peugeot/306/ISO-Extension-Lead/p-71-273-276-132/

This lead will swap all live feeds.
