The message that comes up on the screen is ''fuel cap not properly closed'' (although it is!) l assume a faulty sensor is causing the problem. It is not possible for me to get to the garage in the next few days, is there anything l can do, like turn the warning off?

It is definitely a sensor. Just ignore the message for some time, and manually check the cap from time to time.
